Wherever he unloads his #28 Wissota Midwest Modified, Brennon Weight of LaMoure, N.D., is a threat to win. The numbers don’t lie.
Since 2019, he has 48 feature wins in this Wissota Midwest Modified class. He picked up his 50th Midwest modified feature at Jamestown on May 24. And he isn’t just dominating at one track – he won at four different tracks in 2024 and at six different tracks in 2023.
A reason for his success? Weight said look no further than weekly preparation and maintenance of the car.
“A lot of shop work,” Weight said. “It’s unnoticed and unseen…on the racetrack, in the stands, people don’t understand how much time to be competitive it (takes) in the shop. There are countless hours of shop work to prep for a race. A lot of DNFs are from stuff you miss or don’t look over, and we’ve been very good with no DNFs. A lot of it comes in the shop, making sure things are where they need to be.”
The 37-year-old, who farms in the LaMoure area, actually got his start in racing in the mini-truck class at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon. He also did some demo derby racing before jumping into the Midwest modified class about a decade ago.
Weight races at a lot of different tracks – Jamestown Speedway, Sheyenne Speedway, Tri-County Speedway in Wishek, N.D., I-94 EMR Speedway in Fergus Falls and Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen.
“I like the fact you can race 3 to 4 nights a week if you'd like and drive no further then 60 miles from home,” Weight said of racing in the midwest modifieds. “And if you want to venture out every track that's Wissota has Midwest Modifieds.”
He does have two career track championships, one at Tri-County and one at Jamestown, but is not a weekly points racer.
“I like to stay close, we’re more into the money shows now,” Weight said. “We’re farmers, we get started usually a month or so later. If you miss one night at a local track you are out of the points. We don’t really chase any of that.”
He had a good season in 2024 with seven wins in 31 starts.
“Last year was good,” Weight said.
The 2023 season was even better than 2024. He won the Wissota 100 at I-94, which he called his biggest win, and finished with 12 wins in 31 starts. He was third in national points. One night, he thought he had a flat tire, went to the pits, and came back out at the tail of the field – and won the feature.
“We were really good in ’23,” Weight said. “Some wild things happened that were unbelievable. It felt like somebody else was with us. There were some wild things that went on there. We had 32 starts and won 14. We threw away one or two shows the whole year and we were third in national points.”
Weight is off to a good start in 2025 with two wins (at Jamestown and Tri-County) and four top fives in six starts. He does have two DNFs, which in recent years have been a rarity for the 28 team.
Farming dictates much of Weight’s racing schedule. That includes in the spring with planting, and in the fall when combining starts.
“After the Wissota 100, we’re combining right after that,” Weight said. “The stampede is our borderline; that’s the cutoff.”
Two things have come from the years of driving experience – wisdom and patience. That also helps him stay in contention every night.
“Now, you back out of them and let the carnage happen ahead of you,” Weight said. “When you are younger you are a little braver and don’t care about wrecking and bending up stuff. The older you get, the smarter you get.”
