The weekly competition in the Wissota Midwest Modified class at t I-94 Sure Step Speedway in Fergus Falls is pretty stout — and it means finding a way to victory lane is often difficult.
Jamie Norman of Battle Lake, in his 11th season behind the wheel of the #12x Wissota Midwest Modified, can attest to the quality of drivers who compete against him every week at I-94.
“A lot of these guys that show up weekly, they are up there in national points,” Norman said. “It makes you work a little harder to try and figure out what works better on the car. And just push harder and harder.”
He’s still looking for his first career feature win; his best career finish is second.
“I’ve been close quite a few times,” Norman said. “It would be nice to finally get it out of the way and finally get it.”
The 36-year-old has spent his entire 11-year career in the Wissota Midwest Modified class. His father, Rick — who races the #24x Midwest Modified at I-94 and is always pitted next to him — raced when Jamie was younger.
It was his father’s racing that got Jamie interested in driving himself. So the Normans bought a B mod.
“We ended up buying an old J-Car and started out that way. and ran it two nights and a blew a motor,” Norman said. “I used to be big into fishing; but I sold the boat to buy a new motor and we’ve kept going ever since.”
Norman, who works for Turtle Lake Seamless, admits the start of the 2022 season has been “a little rocky.”
“I’m still battling the car, trying to get it completely figured out,” Norman said. “(I’m) looking for better.”
Norman will resume his season Friday at I-94. One added bonus of racing is getting to work and race next to his father.
“He keeps pushing me harder,” Norman said. “Without him, there’s no way I could do it.”
