Lou’s Mad Town Showdown brought 132 cars to Madison Speedway for the first night of the season-ending doubleheader.

I expected it to be a long night – Madison has never been known for running quick shows, plus having 132 cars in the pits naturally adds to it – and it was, concluding shortly before 1 a.m.

The Wolverine Justin Vogel of Brooten took a big lead early in the Wissota Street Stock feature with Mike Jans of Clarkfield in second and Josh Long of Canby fighting Coltyn Schuler of Montevideo for third. Zach Flickinger of Madison was fifth but closing on Schuler in fourth.

Vogel built a 1.2 second  lead on Jans with 15 to go, and lapped traffic would soon come into play. The top lane was the place to be for the streets and Vogel was hooked up on the high line and the lead grew to  3.8 seconds with eight to go. Schuler and Flickinger had the best race on the track for the fourth spot.

Kyle Dykhoff of Starbuck and Joe Martin make contact heading into turn three, sending both cars spinning. Fortunately, no one else was collected; Martin was charged with the yellow.

The restart was crazy as Long went for the lead with a slider; Vogel responded with a crossover to retake the lead. Long and Schuler got around Jans, who was facing a challenge from Riley for fourth.  Long would take second with six to go. The second caution flew for a spin towards the back. On the restart Long slid back as Riley surged into third behind Schuler, and Dykhoff, the former national champion, was up to fourth. There were multiple cars spinning on the frontstretch with three to go; Landon Albertson had front-end damage and left on the hook. I didn’t see what happened to Chris Behrens; but he also left on the hook during the caution.

Riley went for the slider on the restart but again Vogel answered with the crossover, and that would be the last challenge for the Wolverine aws he prevailed by 1.2 seconds. Riley was second after staring 11th, while Schuler was third, Long fourth and Jans fifth, ahead of Flickinger.

Jason Best took the lead of the Pure Stock feature with Tad Peterson of Dawson in second. Brady Hagen and Ron Hawkinson were battling for third. The caution flew for Mike VanOverbeke’s spin in turn two.

On the restart Jesse Timm of Wood Lake – who started 10th -- moved into third past Hagen who was still fighting Hawkinson for position. Timm went to work on Peterson for second as both closed on Be3st. Timm would get sideways and lose third, but Peterson was all over Best with Hagen  working the outside. Both made the pass of Best as the battle up front was now between Hagen and Peterson.

Peterson had less than a car length on Hagen as Best was fighting back on the bottom.  Soon Timm was back in the mix as it seemed like different cars were fighting for the lead every tim3e around.

Timm made the winning move on the outside of turns one and two and would pick up a hard-fought victory in what was a terrific race at the front.  Peterson settled for second, Hagen was  third. Alex Thorson of Clinton drove a nice race, going from 12th to fourth with Best rounding out the top five.

For having 15 Pure Stocks, there was only one caution.

Ryan Flaten of Madison was the early leader of the Wissota Midwest Modified feature and ehcked out as Haley Dykhoff of Starbuck fought Nick Shumansky of Perham for second. Jake Molitor of St. Cloud climbed to fourth and Chance Kodet, who won his first career feature recently at Granite City Motor Park, was fifth but had several cars on his heels. That included Tim Kanten of milan and Wissota 100 champion Jake Smith of St. Joseph.

Flaten was dominating by 3.3 seconds with 15 to go when the caution came out for Brett Moffenbier who spun in turn two. Another caution resulted on the restart as Luepke spun.

Kanten  moved into second on the restart but Dykhoff was fighting back.  Smith was fourth and Molitor in fifth. But it was apparent Flaten was the class of the field as the lead was up to 2.8 seconds with eight to go.

Dykhoff and Kanten had a whale of a battle for second as Smith was close to those two. The lead  was shrinking as Flaten was mired in a lot of lapped traffic; that would ease as a caution flew with four to go.

Flaten resumed his domination on the final restart and cruised to a 1.19 second win over Kanten. Dykhoff barely nipped Smith for third with Molitor rounding out the top five.

Tommy Bawden of Clear Lake (Minnesota) led early in the Wissota Super Stock feature but Andrew Hedtke was pressuring him. Colton Schultz was running third, Travis Scott of Glenwood fourth and Karter Reents of Glenwood was fifth, although he had some heat from Dylan Nelson of Merrifield.

Bawden was in control at the front, opening a 2.8 second lead on Hedtke. Scott was working the bottom and got around Schultz for third. Bawden turned the race into a runaway but the Scott and Hedtke were fighting hard for third.

Bawden was working through some lapped traffic and Scott cut the lead from four seconds to 3.2 with four to go. Reents took the fourth spot and Nelson also passed Schultz for fifth.  But in the end Bawden was never touched winning by almost three seconds over Scott. Reents ran a solid third, Hedtke was fourth and Nelson fifth in a caution-free main event.

A decent 14-car Wissota Modified field was on hand with Seth Brede and Jake Knapper fighting for the lead at the outset. Knapper took the lead with 19 to go. Brendan Blascyk was running third early but Brian Haben of Appleton passed him, and Brandon Dolman of Evansville was in fifth.

Knapper built a 1.6 lead but that vanished when Ryan Gierke went off turns three and four.  On the restart Haben challenged Knapper for the lead  as Dolman moved to fourth and Travis Saurer of Elizabeth was fifth when the second caution flew.

Knapper worked the low line effectively as Haben ran second. Brede and Saurer were dueling for third. Also moving up was the Ice Man Don Eischens of Richmond, who was closing quickly on Dolman in fifth.

The lead stood at .7 seconds at the halfway point as Haben continued to work the high line Saurer passed Brede for third with about eight to go. Meanwhile, Knapper (pictured above) was in control at the front, stretching the lead to two seconds by the white flag. Knapper won with Haben second, Saurer third, Brede fourth and Eischens fifth.

Parker Gilbertson of Watson wasted no time taking the lead from the front row over Jarrett Huus of Fergus Falls. Adam Prieve of Litchfield was third as Trevor Walsh of Watertown was fourth and Blake Swenson of Watertown was fifth.

After a caution for Cade Skytland’s spin in turn two, Gilbertson set the pace with Walsh now in second.  Adam Prieve of Litchfield settled into third while Huus had pressure from Kranz and Swenson for fourth

Gilbertson stretched the advantage to 1.3 seconds over Walsh and with Prieve in third. Kranz took fourth from Huus.  Gilbertson led every lap and one by a second over Walsh.  Prieve was third, Kranz fourth and Huus fifth.

The Wissota Hornets was a duel between Adam VanDerostyne of Canby and William Lange of Staples. Brandon Louwagie of Marshall was third, Christian Kast of Fairmount was fourth and Thomas Kruger was fifth.

VanDerostyne had about a car length on Lange, but Lange was working trying to find a way around. Kast and Louwagie  raced side-by-side for third.

Lange got crossed up for a second and VanDerostyne opened about a one-second lead, on his way to the win. Lange was second, Louwagie third, Kast fourth and Dalten Pedersen of Estelline wass fifth.

Broksieck, Anderson, Thomas and Mund win at Brown County

Kyle Anderson of Jamestown won the Wissota Midwest Modified feature while Joseph Thomas of Glyndon won the Wissota Modified feature.
