Randall emerges as contender in IMCA Hobby Stocks

Reid Randall is one of the younger drivers locally in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. He’s also proving to be one of the fastest.

The 17-year-old from Park Rapids already has three feature wins this season to make his career total 10, all coming over the last three years. He’s in his fourth year of racing in the hobby stocks, racing at local tracks Norman County Raceway in Ada, Fix It Forward Speedway in West Fargo and Buffalo River Speedway near Glyndon.

“A lot of seat time,” Randall said of the success. “You have to trust your car more than you have to trust yourself sometimes.”

Reid’s dad, Randy Randall, raced in 2022, but it wasn’t long before a young Reid Randall was behind the wheel.

“My dad raced in 2022 as a rookie, and bought the car for pretty cheap back then,” Reid said. “He accomplished what he wanted to accomplish. I pretty much got in as a rookie after he let me do hot laps one night.”

His first year produced six top five finishes in 50 starts.

“Just learning how to drive, there was a lot of ups and downs,” Randall said. “There was times I was quick as a kid, because I didn’t have that fear. Other times there were old people coming after me saying I didn’t know how to drive.”

But racing 50 shows provided him something valuable – seat time. And the more seat time he had, the closer to the front he’d run.

He got the breakthrough in June 2024, in his second year behind the wheel.  Randall remembers his first win, a feature victory at Norman County Raceway in Ada on June 13, 2024.

“The feature I started way in the back, and I drove it up to the front,” Randall said. “The guy in first place got a little squirrelly and I got underneath him.”

Fast forward to 2026 and now he has reached double-digits in feature wins and a track championship to his credit. Randall had five wins in 2025 and won the track championship at Norman County Raceway in Ada and was third at Fix It Forward Speedway in West Fargo.

He’s not satisfied with his success so far, though, saying his aim is for “more wins and accomplishments.”  He has set a goal of winning the IMCA State points in Minnesota.

“Trying to win more track championships,” Randall said of his goal for this year.

This year, Randall has three wins and 11 top fives in 13 starts so far in a car that was totally rebuilt, aside from the engine, in the offseason.

“I think this season has been really good, We had a first rough two weeks (with the) new car parts, but now I’ve got the hang of it now,” Randall said.

Like many, being behind the wheel provides a thrill for Randall.

“I enjoy the adrenaline and the driving part of racing and being able to compete with people that respect me,” Randall said.
