The Dirt Race Central Street Stock Tour made a visit to Rice Lake Speedway on Saturday night with 31 cars on hand. I’ve been to Rice Lake three times, including a couple for the challenge series races years ago, and I really like the place. The track has a good shape and it’s a nice place to watch a race.
There was a bonus for the travelers: the Little Dream, which is held at Rice Lake every year and paid more than $30,000 to the winner last year, is coming up on July 29. Saturday gave the drivers planning to attend to get some valuable laps on the 1/3-mile oval. One driver who has won a ton of big races but badly wants a Little Dream win is the Wolverine, Justin Vogel of Brooten and will be there in a few weeks. I’d suspect some others from out of that immediate who were in attendance will be there on July 29. There were a ton of cars I felt could contend for the win, which is what the tour is really all about.
My policy is if I am covering the tour at a track I will write about the whole show, like I did at Granite City. Rice Lake is the 14th track I’ve covered this summer. A total of 95 cars were in attendance. A lot of modifieds in the region, from many tracks were at Ogilvie to get some laps on the track before the big $100,000 to win special coming up later this month.
The DRC Wissota Street Stock Tour rarely disappoints in terms of racing and action, and this feature did not either. The 24-car, 25-lap Wissota Street Stock feature was brought to the green by Andrew Hanson of Iron River, Wis., and Vogel. Vogel grabbed the lead as Hanson – who totaled a car earlier this year at Ogilvie – was second.
Jeff Nowak of Wausau, who won at Red Cedar on Friday, had a flat tire on the second lap and would pull to the infield, ending his hopes of winning back-to-back nights.
A surprise entrant to me was former national champion Parker Anderson of Phillips, Wis., who was making his season debut. He had climbed to second quickly behind. The first caution waved for Michael Toma’s spin in turn two.
One surprise entrant, at least to me, was former national champion Parker Anderson of Phillips, Wis. He had driven for Scott Bintz several nights last year but was making his debut in a 27 car on Saturday.
Anderson went for the slider on the restart after the first caution and made it stick to take the lead but Vogel stuck the 10 to the cushion and stayed in hot pursuit. Hunter VanGuilder of Canton was running on the bottom and was challenging Vogel for second, and tour point leader Kyle Dykhoff of Starbuck was climbing into fifth behind Nick Traynor of Barron.
Six laps into the feature, Travis Loew and Rachel Boston of Lindstrom, who advanced out of the B main, got together on the backstretch. Boston had some damage and would get towed to the pits. On the restart Vogel was putting on some kind of show on the cushion and got beside Anderson down the frontstretch, but as things were heating up, Jeff Ekdahl’s 11 machine slowed out of turn four and he would pull off the track. Ekdahl is a good runner but on the nights I’ve seen him this season he has had rotten luck.
VanGuilder had gotten by Vogel for second as the 10 as continuing to pound the high side Traynor was fourth and Hanson got by Dykhoff for fifth. Two very good competitors, Levi Randt of Siren and Trey Hess of Grand Forks were lurking outside the top six.
Anderson was starting to pull away as Vogel moved ahead of VanGuilder for second. Traynor was fourth while Dykhoff and Hanson continued to fight for fifth. Traynor moved into third.
With nine to go Fransen, Tuma and Hunter Carter of Mapleton were involved in a tangle in turn four to bring out a yellow. All three were able to drive away. Nick Traynor slid Vogel for second, but shortly after the caution waved for another crash on the frontstretch involving Briar Zimmerman, who was checked in the ambulance afterwards. I didn’t see what happened but the car didn’t look badly damaged. That caution set up a single-file restart and three-lap shootout to the finish that a shootout was exactly what it was.
It was a wild final few laps. Vogel was making another charge on the highside with a four-car breakaway up front. Traynor tried to get a slider to work for the lead but could not finish the pass. VanGuilder was also there as you could throw a blanket over the top four as the white flag waved.
Anderson would hold on for a thrilling .348 second win over Traynor, who edged VanGuilder by .135 seconds for second. VanGuilder’s margin over Vogel was .163 seconds; the top four spots were separated by just over a half-second by my calculation. Dykhoff finished fifth; he has not finished outside the top five on a tour race this season.
Cody Kummer of Medford was the hard charger, going from 16th to seventh. The 15 finishers in that race were a Wissota 100 caliber group IMO.
Much like the Wissota Midwest Modifieds I covered on Friday at I-94, it was plagued with cautions early. There were four cautions before there were three laps even completed.
Jake Stai of New Auburn, Wi., and Mike Schnider of Chetek led the Wissota Midwest Modifieds to their feature. Stai grabbed the lead with Travis Anderson of Colfax battling Schnider
Teenager Blake Adams of Cameron, second in the national points, went around in turn two and collected a pair of cars, including a driver I expected to contend, Landyn Randt of Siren, to bring out the first caution. The caution was charged to Kenny Kincaid; I couldn’t get a great view if Adams had help, but his right rear corner panel was crumpled so there was evidence. Adams, by the way, leads the Wissota Modified national points, too. And he’s 16 years old. His dad, Buzzy, is a five-time Wissota national champion.
On the restart Nick Koehler of Bloomer and Travis Anderson started fighting for second as Schnider fell back to fifth behind Adams. There was contact between George Dalbeck of Wakefield, Mich., and Randt in turn four that sent the 11R spinning; Dalbeck went to the tail.
After the fourth caution Stai continued out front as Anderson and Koehler fighting for second. Adams was pressuring Schnider for fourth with Randt right behind.
Koehler was charging on the outside and made the pass with seven laps to go. The real battle was for third between Schnider, Anderson, Adams and Randt. The fifth caution would come out for Chase Brown, who was done after causing his second caution. That led to a single-file start with six to go.
Koehler got a great restart and pulled away as Schnider was working on Stai for second. Adams made the move past Anderson for third . Koehler’s lead grew to more than two seconds as the white flag waved, and would cruise to the win, his fifth of 2025. Stai was second, Adams cleared Schnider for third and Anderson held off Cody Cimpl of Chetek for fifth.
Alex Myers of Cameron jumped ahead in the Wissota Super Stock feature with Leslie Leu of Medford in second and Tommy Richards of Mondovi in third. Kyle Copp of Brule, Wis., moved into fourth. Richards was side-by-side with Leu for second as Myers opened up a 1.6 second lead. The caution flew for a two-car incident in turn two with 16 to go.
Myers, son of former national champion Curt Myers, had Richards and Leu chasing him on the restart as Andrew Davis of Barron and Kyle Copp were close behind.
Leu was working the high side and closing on Myers as Davis moved into third passed Richards. Leu had to check up when Myers slide high and lost two spots as Davis seized second and Copp and Richards fought side-by-side for third. The caution waved for another incident in turns one and two with eight left. On the ensuing restart a wreck out of turn four brought out the fourth caution, ending the night for Dylan Leu and Jackson Larson of Rice Lake who both left on the hook.
With eight left Myers resumed up front as Richards mounted a charge on the bottom for a couple of laps. Davis came back on the higher groove, which was the place to be for most of the super stocks.
Davis stayed within striking distance of Myers as the white flag waved but the caution would fly for Travis Anderson who broke near the wall on the frontstretch to bring out a caution. Anderson required a tow to the pits.
The yellow proved costly for Myers, as Richards made a move on the bottom with two laps left and moved in front and would prevail by .464 seconds over Leu for win #2 on the year. Davis was third as Myers slid back to fourth, and Copp rounded out the top five.
Ten Wissota Mods were on hand with Brent Prochnow of Colfax holding the early lead before Shane Halopka of Greenwood grabbed the top spot. Adams was into second with the very-good Mike Anderson of Colfax in third after starting eighth. Simon Wahlstrom of Mikana was fighting Anderson for third with Aiden Hoffman back in fifth.
Anderson was the lone car to go to the bottom of the top four in the mod feature. Adams stayed within a car length or two of Halopka. Anderson and Wahlstrom were continuing to fight for third. The top two had nearly 2.5 seconds on Wahlstrom in third.
Lapped traffic became a factor as Halopka and Adams exchanged sliders up front in what turned into a big-time race for the top spot. I don’t know how many sliders were exchanged but the back and forth was something to watch over the final five laps. The racing between the two was clean, too. Halopka would hold on for a .172 second victory. Adams was second, Wahlstrom third, Anderson fourth and Hoffman fifth.
Austin Fancl of Bruce had the lead of the Wissota Pure Stock feature which was the finale of the night. Fanci built a 1.3 second lead with George Richards of Mondovi in second. Caleb Duffie of Chippewa was third, Trevor Phillips of Eleva fourth and Tom Treviranus of Hawthorne was running fifth.
Richards was closing on Fanci, cutting the lead in half. Phillips was well behind Richards for second and Treviranus climbed to fourth with C.J. Wagner running fifth.
Fanci didn’t make any mistakes and ran a smooth race from the get-go to pick up a .937 second win. Richards was second by more than 7.8 seconds over Phillips. Treviranus and Wagner rounded out the top five in a caution-free main event. However, after the checkered, a car would roll in turn two.
