Matt Miller doesn’t mind doing things a little differently when it comes to his race car.
The Glenwood resident is running a Mopar engine in his #13M Wissota Super Stock in a class where most drivers run Chevrolets.
“It’s not a Chevy; it’s something completely different,” Miller said from the pit area at Viking Speedway recently. “It seems like everybody runs Chevy, I wanted to do something different…I’m trying to take something that’s completely different and do the best you can with.”
He’s having a pretty good year in the super stock. Miller has raced nine times this season and has finished in the top 10 eight of those times, including five top five finishes. He has one win at Viking Speedway on Aug. 15. In that race, Miller started third and stayed close to leader Roger Host for several laps. He found an opening in lapped traffic to take the lead and the win.
“Pretty decent,” Miller said of his 2020 season.
Miller, who works at Red Horizon Equipment in Glenwood, did not have a big racing influence growing up.
“It’s something we got hooked into and wanted to do it,” Miller said.
Heactually started out his career on asphalt at the now defunct I-94 Speedway in Sauk Centre. Track management changed hands several times, and then he decided to move into the super stock class.
“I did pretty good there. It was a blast,” Miller said. “The track changed hands enough times so I was sick of that, and I jumped into this class.”
He’s been in the supers for several years now.
With I-94 Sure Step Speedway in Fergus Falls adding Wissota Super Stocks this season, Miller decided to race there weekly, in part because they wanted to get some time on the track prior to the Wissota 100 (which has since been cancelled).
He’s second in the point standings at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. With two points nights remaining he trails William Lund by just five points heading into Friday’s show.
“It’s a lot of fun up there. It’s one of those tracks it’s fun to race,” Miller said. “It’s a nice, challenging track. I like the dry slick part of it.”
So while he is in the hunt for his first track championship heading into the final two nights at I-94, for Miller, racing is about enjoyment.
“I mostly come out here and have a good time with everybody and do the best I can,” Miller said.
