Wissota Street Stock driver Greg Jose has one career feature win at his hometown track, River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, which came a decade ago. He badly would like to win another at the Bullring.
“I’ve been chasing that second one ever since,” Jose said. “It would be nice to get one here. I’ve been chasing it for a long time.”
He nearly did so in early July, when he led the first 18 laps of the feature, only to be passed late by current RCS point leader Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls.
“I’ve been close,” Jose said.
The 37-year-old from Grand Forks has been racing off and on since 2004, all in the street stock class. Like many, family was a big reason he got into it.
“My dad, raced, my uncle raced, and my other uncle raced,” Jose said. “My dad passed away, and me and my uncle put a car together.”
He has one win at River Cities but has four at Devils Lake Speedway, including a win there in May.
Jose has one win this season, at Devils Lake, and has 14 top five finishes in 31 starts. But he also has six DNFs. He’s fifth in the points at River Cities.
“It’s had its ups and downs,” Jose said. “(I’m) not quite there.”
This season, Jose has done some traveling, racing at Ogilvie Raceway, I-94 Sure Step Speedway in Fergus Falls, Casino Speedway in Watertown and Fiesta City Speedway. Tracks like I-94 and Ogilvie are bigger than the smaller tracks he usually races on at Greenbush Race Park, River Cities and Devils Lake.
“I’m loving it. It’s fun getting around...it helps a driver become a better driver,” Jose said.
His goal for the rest of the season is to find victory lane at River Cities. But regardless of that happens, he’s having fun in the street stock class.
“Just the group of people here. Everybody gets along,” Jose saaid. “The class is so competitive. You can go almost anywhere, and as long as you’ve got a decent piece of eqiupment, you can be competitive in it. It’s fun going around – everywhere everybody is friendly.”
