Huus Continues to Grow in Gen X Late Models

tombergie01

Now in his third year in the Gen X Late Model division, Jarrett Huus of Fergus Falls has made steady progress each year. He’s looking for more improvement in 2023.

Huus, 22, is off to a good start with three top five finishes in five starts. He is fourth in the points at his home track, I-94 EMR Speedway.

His interest in the sport started with his dad’s racing.

“I used to be at the racetrack all the time,” Huus said.

Huus started helping a neighbor, and then bought his own car for 2021, a Mastersbilt. It was a lot of learning on the go.

“The first year was really learning how to figure the car out and drive and get it set up,” Huus said. “There was a lot of changes.”

He did race a lot in 2021 during his rookie season, racing 36 nights. Huus had six top fives and 17 top 10s in 36 starts. His best feature finish that year was third at Buffalo River Speedway. The experience of 2021 was boosted by going to practice sessions at I-94 and adjusting the setup.

He didn’t race as often in 2022 but had four top five finishes in 11 starts.

“The handling of the car – just knowing out to drive,” Huus said. “It was a lot smoother...I’m a lot more comfortable.”

He also came close to his first career feature win on May 13, 2022. He led much of the race until multi-time I-94 champion Ben Wolden passed him late. Huus would settle for second.

“We led the whole thing until two to go and Wolden passed us,” Huus said. “We led a lot of laps last year, we just couldn’t get it done.”

And that is a goal this year – getting that first feature win. Huus has switched to a Rocket Chassis this season. He’s also aiming for the points championship at I-94; he is currently fourth heading into this weekend.

“I’d like to win the points here,” Huus said.

Huus, who works as an electrician, is currently leading the Daytona One Gen X Late Model point standings, and says he will purse that points title. He has 464 points after five shows. The winner of that points fund will get $2,000.

“The season is going pretty good – (I’m) still learning and getting comfortable in the new car and working on getting it dialed in,” Huus said. “For the reason of the season the goals would be to get some wins this year and eliminate the small mistakes I’ve made. Looking to get the car dialed in and just learn more and get better.”
