Brandon Fuller has been close to a breakthrough win in the Wissota Late Models at River Cities Speedway. But he hasn’t quite pulled one off yet.
“A lot of second places, but not a win yet,” Fuller said. “Hopefully it comes soon.”
It’s not that he hasn’t been close. He led once until late in the race before his motor blew, allowing Dustin Strand to get by. He’s had other near misses.
“I led most of the race and my engine let loose on the last lap and he got by me,” Fuller said. “I think I have four or five seconds; just never finished it off. Hopefully this year.”
The 40-year-old from Grand Forks has raced off and on for 17 years. He started in the street stocks for several years and picked up some feature wins in the class, before switching to the late models, where he has been ever since.
“My old man raced for quite a few years and I’m good friends with Stevie Anderson, so that’s what persuaded me to do that,” Fuller said.
While he hasn’t won a late model feature, he has finished in the top 10 in points at River Cities every year since 2019, including finishing seventh in 2021. The class usually has more than 20 cars weekly at River Cities and the competition has been stout for several years.
“That’s the good thing about it, it’s so competitive,” Fuller said.
He also enjoys the camaraderie of the class.
“I like all the guys,” Fuller said. “They seem to help out any time I’ve called them for a part or anything. Not one time did anyone give me a straight up. Everyone gets along, it’s awesome.”
This season hasn’t gotten off to a great start for Fuller, who works for an excavation company. He has one top 10 in five starts.
“It has been a really slow start to the year,” Fuller said. “I feel the car is good; the driver is OK. The draw has not been in my favor.”
The NLRA Late Models are scheduled to run on Sunday as part of the Grand Forks County Fair. Fuller’s aim for the rest of the season is to get to victory lane for the first time in a late model – and also have another solid points finish.
“I’m hoping to get that win,” Fuller said. “And a top seven or eight in points would be pretty cool.”
