Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon added the INEX Legends class in 2020. So Brian Frederick decided to start racing his racing career in them that year – at age 50.
“They started racing (Legends) in Lisbon, I thought I’m going to get a car,” Frederick said. “I’ve always been around it; so I thought, perfect opportunity.”
He had been around racing plenty before getting a car. Frederick’s brother, Allen raced and his nephew, Zach, races IMCA Modifieds at Dacotah Speedway in Mandan and is a former street stock driver. The racing bug was always there for Frederick, who lives in Gwinner.
“It was always there, it was just the time was right,” Frederick said.
Frederick has not only raced at his home track of Sheyenne Speedway this season, but also has raced at Dacotah, Red River Valley Speedway and Buffalo River Speedway near Glyndon.
“Mainly, run Lisbon and hopefully I can finish in the top five in points,” Frederick said. “Mainly, just having fun. I want to hit races here and there and go where the wind blows me.”
In his rookie season in 2020, he raced 27 times with eight top five finishes. In 2021, he improved, picking up nine top fives in 37 starts and finishing second in the points at Sheyenne. Last year was a tougher year for Frederick, which included going through a chassis after impact with the wall at Sheyenne.
“They can be a handful on a dry slick,” Frederick said.
Frederick’s best feature finish is third, which he accomplished twice in 2021. He is still chasing his first feature win but is being patient in his pursuit.
“You always want it. If it happens, it happens. I’m not going to jump through hoops to make it happen,” Frederick said. “If it’s there, the opportunity, I’m going to take it but I’m not going to push the envelope.”
This year has had its ups and downs for Frederick, who works as a maintenance mechanic at Bobcat in Gwinner. He rolled his car at Red River Valley Speedway in early June, but has run better of late, including a top five at Sheyenne on June 15.
“It was a horrible start, but it’s getting better,” Frederick said.
Now in his fourth season, Frederick is happy to have jumped into racing at age 50.
“It’s been fun. A lot of fun,” Frederick said. “I’ve had a good experience with a lot of good people.”
