Dusty Mund had been close to winning a feature at his hometown track, Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon over the past few seasons, but couldn’t quite get to victory lane. In fact he had finished second eighth time. Last Thursday, it was his time to celebrate.
Mund held off challenges from Sean Johnson and Regan Reinke to win the INEX Legend feature; it was his first win in Lisbon since a victory in the Bomber class in 2009.
“I finished second way too many times,” Mund said of Thursday’s win. “Finally got it done!”
It was the second feature win of 2025 for the 46-year-old from Lisbon. His first win came on July 11 at Tri-County Speedway in Wishek, which was his first feature victory in 16 years. Once again, he faced a challenge from Reinke before holding on for the win.
“I had like 15 second places. I could never figure it out. I couldn’t get that monkey off my back,” said Mund, who has raced in the INEX Legend class since 2020. “It was surreal, with Regan Reinke right on my tail. I don’t win a lot. When you’re leading a race, you are kind of nervous and don’t know what’s happening behind. The last 4-5 laps he came on pretty strong. It was pretty cool.”
Mund, who owns Job Erection and Engineering in Lisbon, started out his racing career in 1994 in the Bomber class. He moved to the Wissota Street Stocks until 2003 before taking some time off to start a family. His first feature win was in the street stocks at Red River Valley Speedway in 2003 in a car he built himself. For those years, he raced Fords and built his own cars.
“I took pride in building my cars since I was 12 years old,” Mund said. “I was never a very good setup guy, I’d drive the car and learn how to drive it as was set up.”
He took some more time off from racing but decided to jump back into it when Sheyenne Speedway added the INEX Legends class. He bought a couple of cars from Drew Papke of Bismarck.
“A couple of buddies of mine helped me, and we had some fun,” Mund said. “It’s an awesome class, very competitive. It blew up when I started. This new class came out, I always loved racing, always been a family thing. It was a cheap, good class to start in. It was a whole different animal.”
Bo Gregor of Lisbon, a former Hobby Stock champion at Sheyenne, drives the #2 INEX Legend car owned by Mund.
“I told him ff you help me set up my car, and help me with the maintenance, I’ll let you drive one of my cars,” Mund said.
He also is a big sponsor of fellow INEX Legend driver Jeremy Meyer of Gwinner.
After a couple of years of getting the feel for the class, Mund started finishing towards the front. He had five top fives in nine starts in 2022, finishing second three times. He followed with six top fives in 10 starts in 2023, adding a pair of runner-up finishes. He added three more top fives in 2024.
“We don’t race a whole lot. Seat time is one of the biggest keys to these things. Consistent seat time definitely helps,” Mund said. “For me it’s a lot of luck. I don’t consider myself a good driver because I don’t know how to set up the cars. Bo has really helped me out a lot.”
Mund isn’t the only member of his family involved in racing. His brother Mike and nephew Ryan both race in the street stocks while another nephew, Braiden, races in the short trackers. Dusty Mund has also sponsored more than a dozen local racers through his business, Job Erection and Engineering.
He’s already accomplished two goals for the 2025 season --- winning a feature and winning a feature in Lisbon. But there’s another accomplishment out there, and that is winning the points title at Sheyenne. He holds a slight lead over Regan Reinke in what is a very competitive battle
“I’m going to give it my all,” Mund said. “I’ve never won a track championship. I would love to win there and have a track championship trophy on my shelf.”
