The weather finally cooperated with Casino Speedway after a brutal stretch where five of the last six races had been cancelled because of rain and even a tornado but had a nice night for Kids Night. It was a packed house at the ¼-mile which was good to see.
The track was racy all night and there were some excellent feature races, at least in my opinion. There is the Clash at Casino next Saturday at Casino which will feature the Tri-State Late Model series.
Maria Broksieck of Goodwin and Jayden Michaelsohn of Aberdeen led the 10-car Wissota Street Stock feature to green. I was keeping an eye on Jason Marko of Watertown and Andy Rossow of Florence, who were starting in rows three and four, respectively.
Broksieck stuck her 14 to the bottom, like she has done so many times at Casino, and rolled to the lead. Tyler Lamb of Clark moved into second as Marko and Rossow were moving up through the field. Goth was pressuring Michaelsohn for third and would take the spot with 17 to go.
Broksieck’s lead was more than a second over Lamb, who had Huron driver Matt Goth and Marko closing on him quickly. Rossow was pressuring Michaelsohn for fifth.
The best battle was for second as Lamb had a ton of heat from Marko and Goth. Rossow was closing on that battle. Broksieck meanwhile was out front by almost three seconds by the halfway point.
Marko moved into second and Rossow soon followed into fourth as he went to work on Lamb for third. Marko cut a few tenths off of Broksieck’s lead but was going to need a caution realistically as the lead was still at more than 2.5 seconds with four to go.
Marko did cut more than a second off the lead but the gap was too big as Broksieck rolled to a 1.7 second victory. Marko was second from sixth while Rossow went from eighth to third. Goth was fourth and Lamb was fifth in a caution-free main event that lasted less than six minutes, a great job by those drivers.
Tyler MacFarlane led the opening lap of the Gen X late Models but had a ton of heat from Parker Gilbertson of Watson, who won his first career feature at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon earlier this summer. Gilbertson took the lead on the third lap but nearly spun in turn two and lost the spot to MacFarlane. Trevor Walsh of Watertown was third, Jeff Nelson of Perham was fourth and the veteran Curt Kranz of Watertown was fifth.
Gilbertson regained the top sspot and Walsh seized second. Nelson had Kranz and Blake Swenson applying pressure for fourth. Gilbertson and Walsh were both running the higher lane, and Gilbertson’s lead was 3-4 car lengths. The caution flew for Kranz, who had stalled as he was trying to get to the pit area, and officials wanted to make sure he was clear and threw the yellow.
The top side was the place to be for the Gen X Late Models as the top three had opened up some distance on the field before the caution waved for the XJr of Hope Swenson.
On the restart with seven to go Walsh chose the bottom and found something and took the lead with five to go. Nelson had passed McFarland for third with Blake Swenson soon grabbing fourth. A debris caution waved with three to go after contact between Bodie Croninger and McFarland in turn four.
Walsh had no issues over the final three laps to pick up the win by 1.7 seconds over Nelson, who had a good run in second. McFarland was third, Blake Swenson was fourth and Gilbertson, who had some damage after hitting the wall earlier, settled for fifth.
Superman Mike Stearns of Aberdeen was coming off of a great run at the Race for the Fallen Linemen at Viking Speedway on Saturday, where he took second. Between the second-place purse and the contingencies I am estimating he walked out of Viking with more than $2,700, not bad. He had the inside pole for the Wissota Mod feature on Sunday at Casino.
But it was Huron diriver Adam Brotherton, a rookie in the idivision, who took the early lead on the outside. Tony Konold of Clear Lake was third, Cayden Schmeling of Watertown fourth and Kenny Mayer of Hazel in fifth.
The Wissota Mods stuck to the high line and Brotherton was in control as the top four got very spread out. By the halfway point, Stearns was eating into the lead and had it down to 2-3 car lengths as Konold was comfortably in third. With four to go Stearns took a look down low as they encountered a slower car. Stearns tried very hard on the low line but with the lapped car there, throwing a slider wasn’t feasible. Brotherton would hold on for the win, his fourth of 2025 and first in an Wissota Mod at Casino. It was a great battle for the lead over the final few laps.
Konold was a solid third with Schmeling in fourth and Mayer in fifth. After a couple of early restarts the race had a long green flag run to end it.
Ryan Flaten of Madison edged ahead of Scott Tofte of Madison for the early Wissota Midwest Modifiedl lead and those two raced side by side for the lead in the early going. Tommy Nichols of Watertown was third, Scott Hansen of Garden City was fourth and Dawson Zabel of Selby was fifth.
Flaten was runnin in the ditch with Tofte up high, but a lapped car of Trevor Rush of Clear Lake spun in front of the leaders and nearly collected Tofte and Nichols. Fortunately everyone was able to continue.
Flaten resumed out front with Tofte in second. Zabel was pressuring Nichols for third with Hansen in fourth. Zabel found something on the bottom and moved into third and then went to work on Tofte as Flaten opened a few car lengths up front. Tofte put his 28T to the top and never left while Zabel was in the ditch; Flaten never wavered from the low lane.
As the lead pack encountered Rush, there was contact and it led to Tofte suffering a flat tire. The restart with three to go saw Nichols and Zabel dueling for second behind Flaten. Nichols had some momentum on the top side and made a charge at the lead but fell short as Flaten prevailed for the win. Flaten is having a very good summer in his Midwest modified with six wins.
Nichols settled for second, Zabel was third in what was a terrific race. Terry Reilly of Watertown made a nice run from seventh to fourth with the veteran Todd Stark of Watertown going from eighth to fifth.
There were national point implications for the Wissota Late Models with two of the top four in the standings in attendance: national leader Tyler Peterson (TPO) of Hickson, who started third, and fourth-place Chad Becker of Aberdeen, who started second.
Stearms, doing double duty, had the inside pole but Becker took the top spot. Peterson was underneath Stearns with Jayson Good of Watertown in fourth and Morgan Ward Grosz of Watertown in fifth.
Becker opened up more than a second on TPO while Good and Stearns ran side by side for third. Ward Grosz had some pressure from Trevor Anderson of Watertown.
Tyler Thomas was attempting to head to the infield and Becker got caught undernearth and would spin to bring out the yellow. Becker would get his spot back and didn’t seem to have much damage. The 3T came back out – why I don’t know considering he tried to pull in – and slowed again and would pull off again,
TPO was back on Becker’s tail on the restart and went to his outside lane and wouldtake the lead. TPO was much faster in turns three and four but Becker was better in one and two. Good was third with Ward Grosz up to fourth.
Becker went up high in turns one and two and TPO went low, and it was a bit of a chess match as Becker stayed on the bottom. Good was not far behind in third and was closing on the top two. Becker faced some lapped traffic but was pulling away as Good was pressuring TPO for second. Becker would push the lead to 1.4 seconds at the checkered. TPO held off Good for second with Ward Grosz capping off a good night in fourth. Stearns was a solid fifth.
After a multi-car wrecked ended the night for Gebhart at the start of the main event, Adam VanDerostyne of Canby was sin a good fight with Dean Roe for the lead. Travis Bruns of Alexandria was third but soon moved pasat Roe for third. Christian Kast of Fairmount was third and Bradley Rossow of Florence in fourth.
Jeff Rohner of Willmar, the winner at Viking Speedway on Saturday, was moving towards the front but had contact with another car and nearly spun, costing him some momentum as he moved to the front. The caution came out with eight to go.
On the restart Rohner was not in the top five alongside Kast as VanDerostyne pulled away. Rossow’s night would end with a flat tire.
Rohner got by Roe and chased VanDerostyne, with Bruns running in third. Roe had Kast all over him for fourth. Rohner was really fast, though and erased the lead and would make a late move to pick up the victory. VanDerostyne, the winner at Fiesta City Speedway on Friday, was second with Bruns capping off a good run for third. Brett Moffenbier made a last move past Kast for fifth.
Casino notes
--There were three Swensons in the Gen X Late Model feature: Blake Swenson in the 10X; his sister Hope Swenson was in the XJr.; and his wife Brittany Swenson in the 11x.
--Aaron Sowers of Watertown had an issue in his Wissota Modified heat and left on the hook and did not make the call for the main event.
--Tony Miller of Browns Valley ran the Dirt Race Central Street Stock Tour this summer for the first time, and finished a solid eighth in the point standings. Kyle Dykhoff of Starbuck was the dominant car of the tour and won the title. Miller finished seventh in Sunday’s street feature.
--I mentioned 82-year-old Clarence Washburn of Hector racing a late model at Fiesta City Speedway on Friday. Well, Rich Thomas of Aberdeen, a long-time fixture in South Dakota racing, is still out there in his T3 late model at age 84. Impressive. I can only hope to be in as good of shape and health as those two -- if I make it to my 80s.
