Aberle Aiming High for 2020

tombergie01

Daniel Aberle has a win at Devils Lake already this season.

Daniel Aberle built a brand new Wissota Street Stock this offseason, and he set his sights high for 2020: a top five finish in Wissota national points.

That plan may be altered a bit as track schedules have been altered by the Covid-19 Pandemic but he still has goals

“My first goal, before the Covid stuff came along, I was going to hit as many tracks as I could and try and get a top five in national points,” Aberle said. “The highest I’ve been was 15th. I built a brand new car this year, and I thought what better chance to do it than when you build a brand new car.”

Aberle is one of several street stocks who will be on hand on Friday for the season opener at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. The Wissota Street Stocks will be running for $700 as will the Wissota Midwest Modifieds. Second-place finishers will get $300. The race is presented by Total Ag Solutions & Big Al's Construction.

Now in his seventh season in the street stocks, Aberle, 28, is a top runner at River Cities Speedway and Devils Lake Speedway. He was fourth in the points at River Cities Speedway in 2019 with one feature win after placing second in 2018.

“I like the streets. It’s good competition. It’s always neck and neck. It’s never someone who is way out in front. A lot of times it’s good, clean racing,” Aberle said.

The Finley, N.D., resident grew up around racing and his uncle, long-time racer Todd Heinrich, was an influence. Heinrich raced in the IMCA Stock Cars at Red River Valley Speedway last year and spent many years in the super stocks.

“I got a lot of help between him and Rick Schulz,” Aberle said.

He had five feature wins in 2019 and since 2017, has posted 16 wins, including one at Devils Lake last week. He started 12th in the field and made a charge through the field and made a late pass of Dustin Ebensteiner for the win.

He won the track title at Devils Lake in 2018 and had five wins at the 1/4-mile oval that year.

Aberle, who works for the Steele County Highway Department, plans to run several races on the Steffes Wissota Street Stock tour this summer. The 16-race tour, which has had some adjustments because of Covid-19 cancellations, has stops in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

“I like to go to Minnesota. Whenever I leave Minnesota, I never have to fix a thing on the car,” Aberle said.

His biggest career win came on July 27, 2019. He recorded a clean sweep at Greenbush Race Park, and winning the feature was worth $1,000, which is his biggest career payday.

“That was an awesome night,” Aberle said.
