Sours Aiming for Continued Growth in IMCA Modified Class

tombergie01

Whether on the wrestling mat or behind the wheel of a race car, Jordan Sours knows what a challenge is.

Sours is an IMCA Modified driver who races at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo and Jamestown Speedway. He’s also a four-time North Dakota State high school wrestling champion from Lisbon High School.

Which one is more challenging?

“I would have to think more driving a race car; the physical part is wrestling by far,” Sours said. “You definitely have to put time into both.”

Sours, 19, is in his sixth year of racing. He started six years ago when took over the hobby stock that was piloted by his uncle, Clare Miller.

“My uncle and my dad both raced. I grew up around it; I always wanted to do it,” Sours said. “I took over my uncles car and went from there.”

After three years in the hobby stock class, where he won four features, Sours ventured into the IMCA Modifieds; he is in his third season in the class in 2022.

The IMCA Modified class is highly competitive at Red River Valley Speedway, where experienced drivers like Austin Arneson, Dave Shipley, Jesse Skalicky, Tyler Hall and Matt Aukland provide stout competition.

“Once I get passed by those guys, I try to follow them and pick something up every time,” Sours said. “They race pretty clean so that’s fun.”

His best finish in an IMCA Modified is second, and he’s hungry for that first feature victory in the class.

“We talk about it dang near every week,” Sours said. “We want one pretty bad,”

The more laps Sours has gotten in a modified, the more comfortable he’s become.

“I’ve been able to read the track a lot more. A lot of it is seat time and seeing how to race others, and how close you can stick your nose into places with the mod compared to the bomber,” Sours said.

Sours hit three stops on the Dakota Classic Mod Tour this year and says traveling later in the year is a possibility.

“In the mod I’ve started to venture around a little bit,”

He has a clear goal for the rest of the season.

“We’re chasing that first win,” Sours said. “We’ll try to get faster and faster every week.”
