Jawaski one of several promising young talents in INEX Legends division

Cody Jawaski of Kindred is in his fourth year in the INEX Legend cars, and admits he loves the class.

“I like how racy they are,” Jawaski said. “You get good racing in other classes, but it feels like we can stick them in a lot of different places and get more lanes of racing going.”

The 17-year-old, who will be a junior this fall, is one of several promising teenage drivers in the Legends division.  He is currently fifth in the points at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, which concludes its 2025 campaign with the season championship on Friday.

Jawaski’s dad, Randy, raced for a few years and that is how he got an interest in the sport. His debut came in the Sling Shots at Jamestown Speedway.  On his first race, he won the feature.

But there was something bigger that occurred that evening – he talked with INEX Legend veteran Sean Johnson of Kindred in the pit area about that division.

“I met Sean Johnson there that night. I talked with him that night,” Jawaski said. “The biggest question I had for him was shifting gears in them, believe it or not.”

Randy Jawaski got his son a Legend car after that, and in Cody’s words, “I’ve been hooked ever since.”

His first year in the Legend class was 2022 and he raced 43 times with four top five finishes.  In 2023, in just his second year in the class, he recorded his first career feature win on May 21 at Buffalo River Speedway near Glyndon.

“That was pretty ecstatic; I am not going to lie,” Jawaski said.

Last year, he had five top fives in 17 starts. Along the way, he learned some things about how to drive the Legends car.

“Being careful with that right foot,” Jawaski said. “You’ve got to know to steer, and give people space. You touch, you are pretty much over in them.”

Jawaski has raced 10 times this summer and has six top fives. He had a pair of runner-up finishes at Red River Valley Speedway in June.

“It’s definitely been my best year yet,” Jawaski said.

Jawaski is five in the points at RRVS heading into Friday’s season championship. He is five points behind fourth-place Johsua Wiest. But at the finale, he would like to get to victory lane for the first time at RRVS.

“Would be a dream come true,” Jawaski said. “We’ve come close very many times. Always something comes up.”

One of the things Jawaski enjoys about racing is the atmosphere.

“Getting to see everybody, the fans coming out and their support,” Jawaski said. “It’s like a like a whole other community down here you don’t get anywhere else.”
