Not surprisingly, the weather has delayed the opening of several area tracks.
Openings delayed:
I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls has postponed its season opener until May 17.
Viking Speedway in Alexandria has postponed its season opener until May 11.
River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks has postponed its opener until May 10.
Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo has postponed its opener until May 10.
Openers on Schedule as of Today:
Sheyenne Speedway’s season opener is set for May 19 as scheduled at the 1/4-mile track in Lisbon, ND.
Jamestown Speedway’s season opener is May 11.
Buffalo River Race Park near Glyndon will open May 11.
Norman County Raceway in Ada opens May 23 as scheduled.
A few tracks out of the area have opened — Dacotah Speedway in Mandan, ND, Ogilvie Raceway in Minnesota, and Cedar Lake Speedway in Wisconsin. But for the most part, the long winter, coupled with recent rain and cool weather, has delayed the season.
It’s understandable. You want a good, smooth racing surface with more than one lane and the cool and wet conditions aren’t very conducive to that. As antsy as some people get to race, remember it is a long season for both the cars and tracks. Opening for the sake of opening with a rough track because the surface is soft isn’t always the best thing.
Hopefully, we can start warming up and track officials can get on the tracks and start working with the surface.
