Hunter Has Enjoyed Sustained Success in Midwest Modifieds

If you’ve followed Wissota Midwest Modified racing in the northern Red River Valley or in the Winnipeg region in recent years, one driver that’s usually at or near the front is Austin Hunter.

Hunter, from Winnipeg, has 103 career feature wins in the Wissota Midwest Modified class, including 67 since 2016. He was third in national points in 2017 and second in 2018.

“I’ve got a lot of seat time,” Hunter said. “When we first started we first started racing we got hooked up with Dustin (Strand) at Millennium and he’s helped me with the set ups; that sped up the learning curve quite a bit.”

Hunter has won two track championships at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks and also has track titles at his home track, Victory Lane Speedway.

“We’ve done OK,” Hunter said.

He has been in the Midwest Modified class for 12 years; he got his start in go-karts at a young age.

“I’ve always been around racing,” Hunter said.

Hunter, who works in part sales for Keewatin Truck Service (family business) in Winnipeg, finds one thing appealing about the midwest modified class.

“It’s so easy to travel. Every track in Wissota runs B mods,” Hunter said. “I wanted to do some traveling, and the B mods seemed like the best option to do that.”

He has a win at the Seitz Memorial, and another of his memorable win came at I-94 Sure Step Speedway in Fergus Falls.

“It was Race of Champions, and it was one of my first times there,” Hunter said. “And we ended up winning it.”

This season, Hunter has two feature wins — one at River Cities Speedway and one at Victory Lane Speedway in Winnipeg — and seven top five finishes. He leads the points at Victory Lane and is third at River Cities. This, despite battling some

“It hasn’t been my strongest season,” Hunter said. “We’re continuing to work hard and hopefully the luck will turn around.”
