Ferris Shows Growth in IMCA Sport Mods in 2021

Brandon Ferris of Moorhead is enjoying, in his own words, his best racing season. It's fitting since it also happens to be his passion.

“It gives me something to do. It’s a fun hobby,” Ferris said. “The people around here are pretty awesome. Family and friends support me, so it’s cool to have all that support. It’s fun to have that.”

As far as his racing roots, go, Ferris’s grandfather pitted for long-time driver Greg Johnson. His uncle, Scott Sailer, ran in the Mini Stocks.

“I always went out to watch him,” Ferris said. “I ended up wanting to get into it, and so I got a go-kart when I was little and went from there.”

He started in the go-karts and then moved into the Wissota Mod 4s. The 2019 season was his first full year in the IMCA Sport Mod class, where he has found a home.

And it was that year when he broke through for his first career win, on Aug. 9, at Red River Valley Speedway.

“It was awesome,” Ferris said. “I never thought I’d get it that early on with the new car. I thought it would take a couple of years at least. It felt good getting that getting that first one out of the way.”

His second career win came on June 25 at Red River Valley, in which he won a hard-fought duel with veteran Scott Jacobson of Fargo.

Ferris, who works as a seed plant manager for Tobolt Seed, has seven top fives and a win in 2021, which he calls his “best season.” He has four top fives at Red River Valley Speedway.

“I’ve had a couple of top fives, and won in West Fargo,” Ferris said. “I’ve done really good in the heat races, if I could just finish it off in the feature — I’ve had a good car all year.”

Ferris is sixth in the points at Buffalo River Speedway this season. This week, it is the finale at Red River Valley Speedway along with the Corn Cob Nationals doubleheader at Buffalo River Speedway. He’s looking to finish the season strong.

“Hopefully get a couple of more feature wins,” Ferris said. “I don’t want to jinx myself; we’ll see what we can do.”
