Buffalo River Race Park Makes the Move to Saturday Racing

After being a Sunday night track for decades, Buffalo River Race Park near Glyndon, Minn., is making a big change in 2019 to Saturday night racing. The 1/4-mile track is scheduled to open the 2019 season this Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” BRRP promoter Kevin Nathe said. “With the new ownership, and with the track’s record of how Saturday events have done spectator-wise, food/beverage-wise and business wise — there’s a few people upset, but the overall response has been pretty amazing.”

The same weekly classes will run at BRRP this summer — IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks, along with INEX Legends, Hornets, Lightning Sprints, and Slingshots. The IMCA Stock Cars will make four appearances at the track this year. The class has grown locally — Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo had 14 on opening night. In addition to RRVS the class also runs locally at Norman County Raceway in Ada.

“I like the class, it’s a good class,” Nathe said. “I think it will grow around here.”

The NOSA Sprints, a popular event at BRRP in the past, will be at the track twice. Their first appearance will be May 26, along with the IMCA Stock Cars.

“They always do pretty well,” Nathe said. “It’s a fun, racy track for them come feature time.”

One thing Nathe hopes Buffalo River Race Park maintains is a grassroots feel.

“When someone wants to get into racing — it always seems like Glyndon is the place they start,” Nathe said. “It’s smaller and has more of a family feel to it.”

While the biggest change is the move to Saturday nights, Nathe is also hoping some post-race camaraderie between fans and drivers upstairs in the bar area of the track. The upstairs will have TVs up there replaying the stream of the racing earlier in the night.

“We’ve got some cool stuff happening after the races for the drivers,” Nathe said. “We’d love to see the drivers and spectactors just hang out together.”
