The INEX Legends class seems like a perfect fit for second-year driver Zander Bauer of Gwinner.
The 22-year-old, who started racing in July 2020, likes several things about the class.
“It’s the more affordable class, and they are one of the cooler looking cars to me,” Bauer said. “I love the way they look. They’re a lot of fun to drive.”
Bauer, who works at Ray-Mac in Gwinner, got interested in racing by watching as a fan.
“I went to the races and watched and I really wanted to race bad,” Bauer said. “I got a car, and here we are.”
He has made big strides in his second year behind the wheel. He raced 13 times in 2020 and his best feature finish was eighth. This year, he has nine top fives in 22 starts with a best finish of second.
HIs career best finish was second at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon on May 23. He’s finished third four times this year and has nine top fives in 22 starts. He is also fifth in the points at his home track, Sheyenne Speedway.
“It’s getting used to driving the car and time out on the track,” Bauer said. “And a little bit of drive — I want to get better and do better.
“I haven’t got a first (win) yet,” Bauer said. “But I’d like to.”
One thing Bauer enjoys about the INEX Legends — in addition to the racing itself — is the people he races against.
“There’s a fantastic group of people. Everybody’s willing to help you with anything,” Bauer said. “T’s something to get away for the weekend and keep you busy. It’s an adrenaline rush like I’ve never had before.”
He wants to finish the 2021 season strong — and he’s striving for his first career win.
“Hopefully I can get a couple more top fives and get a first place up there,” Bauer said. “That’d be perfect.”
