A Look at the RaceChaser Area Season, Month-to-Month

RaceChaser did a season overview/recap a few weeks ago, now it’s time to break down the season by specific events and wins with some highlights. We’ll start in May when Devils Lake, Sheyenne and River Cities opened and then proceed month-by-month:


May

May 16-Todd Carter of Lisbon (Wissota Street Stock) and Preston Carr of Carrington (Wissota Midwest Modified) won opening night at Devils Lake Speedway. Devils Lake was the first track in the region to open in 2020.

23-Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks picked up the first of her five wins in 2020 in the POWRi Minn-Kota Lightning Sprints at Devils Lake. Daniel Aberle of Finley won the street stocks that night.

26-A whopping 122 cars were in attendance at opening night at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon, with Corey Storck (Wissota Midwest Modified), Tye Wilke (INEX Legend), Jonny Carter (Wissota Street Stock), Bo Gregor (Hobby Stock) and Neil Walton (Mini Stock) winning the opening night features.

30-River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks opened with three classes on hand. Todd Carter won another feature while Matt Schow of McIntosh won the Wissota Midwest Modified feature.


Rick Schulz of Horace won the IMCA Stock Car King Pin Klash at Red River Valley.

June

4-Opening night winners at Norman County Raceway in Ada included Rich Pavlicek of Casselton in the IMCA Sport Mods, Brock Gronwold of Fergus Falls in the Wissota Midwest Modified, Ryan Braseth of Ulen in the INEX Legends, Mike Anderson of Walcott in the IMCA Stock Cars and Austin Arneson of Fargo in the IMCA Modifieds.

5-Opening night winners at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo included Rick Schulz of Horace in the IMCA Stock Cars, Billy Kendall of Brainerd in the IMCA Modified, Luke Johnson of Moorhead in the IMCA Sport Mod, Brodee Eckerdt of Grand Forks in the IMCA Hobby Stock and Tye Wilke of Detroit Lakes in the INEX Legends.

5-Austin Pierce of Grand Forks got his season off to a strong start with a NOSA Sprint feature win at River Cities Speedway. Pierce would win eight times -- most of any sprint driver in the area -- in 18 starts and won the track title at River Cities.

13-Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks won the Wissota Late Model feature at Devils Lake Speedway.

13-Eric Riley of Morris won the Steffes Street Stock tour feature at Jamestown Speedway.

14-Justin Vogel of Brooten won the Steffes Street Stock Tour stop at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon, winning a hard-fought battle with Eric Riley. Corey Storck won his second midwest modified feature of the year at the 1/4-mile oval. Storck picked up $750 for his win while Vogel won $700.

18-Todd Heinrich of Fargo won Night 1 of the King Pin Klash in the IMCA Stock Cars at Norman County Raceway in Ada.

19-Riley edged Jonny Carter by the slimmest of margins to win the Steffes Street Stock Tour feature at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.

19-Rick Schulz of Horace won the second night of the King Pin Clash at Red River Valley Speedway. Tanner Engen of Detroit Lakes won the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Darren Pfau of West Fargo won his first IMCA Modified feature of the year.

26-Tom Corcoran of East Grand Forks won the Wissota Late Model feature at River Cities Speedway. He now has a feature win in six different decades, which may be unmatched in the area.

26-Seth Klostreich of Grand Forks won his first career Wissota Street Stock feature at River Cities Speedway.

27-Brad Seng of Grand Forks topped a solid field to win the season-opening NLRA Late Model feature at Devils Lake Speedway.

28-Jess Brekke of Devils Lake won the Wissota Midwest Modified feature at the Dakota Dream at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon. Todd Carter, Alex Braseth, Nick Thoreson and John Current added Dream wins.


July

3-Nick Ranten of East Grand Forks won his first career NOSA Sprint feature at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.

9-Casey Arneson of Fargo won the Dakota Cat Mod Shootout feature at Norman County Raceway.

9-Kalvin Kesselberg of Ada won his first career IMCA Stock Car feature at Norman County Raceway.

10-Tyler Hall of Fertile led a majority of the race before a late yellow opened the door for star Ricky Thornton Jr. to make a late pass at the Dakota Classic Modified tour stop at Red River Valley Speedway

10-Ryan Satter of Dent won the Steffes Street Stock Tour feature at I-94 Sure Step Speedway.

11-Eric Riley of Morris edged Jonny Carter — again — for the Steffes Street Stock tour win at Viking Speedway in Alexandria. It was the first time Riley had ever won at Viking. 67-year-old Ron Saurer held off several challenges to win the Wissota Midwest Modified feature, his first of 2020.

11-Jade Hastings won the NOSA Sprint feature at Devils Lake Speedway.

16-Dan Ebert of Lake Shore won the Wissota Modified feature at Norman County Raceway, besting a field of 21 cars.

17-Todd Carter won the Steffes Street Stock Tour stop at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen.

18-Jason Strand of Portland won the Golden Hammer Challenge at Devils Lake Speedway. Joe Potter of Euclid won his first Wissota Street Stock feature of 2020.

18-Hastings won the NOSA Sprint feature at Red River Valley Speedway.

19-Dustin Strand made a great charge through the field to finish fifth at the World of Outlaw Late Model special at. River Cities Speedway.

23-Andy Wagner of Ada snapped a string of bad luck with the feature win in the IMCA Sport Mods at Norman County Raceway in Ada.

24-Jack Koranda of Bluffton won his first career Wissota Street Stock feature at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. Koranda won three features in 2020.

24-Mike Greseth of Harwood won the Wissota Modified feature at I-94. Greseth had three wins on the season and nine top five finishes.

25-Brendan Mullen of Grand Forks won the first NOSA Sprint feature of his career at Jamestown Speedway. He added another win a week later at the Governor's Cup at Mandan.

25-Jason Cook of Brandon won the Wissota Super Stock feature at Viking Speedway. Cook, after many successful years of racing in the midwest modified and super stock classes, retired from racing after the 2020 season.

30-Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks won the NLRA Late Model feature at Norman County Raceway in Ada.

31-Dave Cain of Corcoran won the Bob Gierke Memorial Modified feature at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. Matt Baker of St. Joseph won the midwest modified portion.


Brody Troftgruben won his first career late model feature in August at Devils Lake.

August

1-Brody Troftgruben of Grand Forks won his first career late model feature by topping Dustin Strand at Devils Lake Speedway.

1-Austin Arneson of Fargo won all three features of the Red River IMCA Modified North Tour.

6-Nick Omdahl of Grand Forks, the 2019 NOSA Sprint Champion, won his first NOSA feature of the season at Norman County Raceway.

7-Shane Sabraski of Rice won the Wissota Super Stock special at I-94 Sure Step Speedway.

8-Sabraski then won the Jerry Kluver Memorial Wissota Super Stock special at Viking Speedway the next night.

8-Jonny Carter won the Steffes Street Stock feature at Jamestown Speedway.

14-All three tracks in the RaceChaser coverage area — Red River Valley, River Cities and I-94 Sure Step — rained out. Only night that happened this summer.

15-Josh Thoennes of Alexandria won the Wissota Modified feature at Viking Speedway. A great crowd was on hand for NAPA night. Thoennes won two features on the season.

16-Brennon Weight of LaMoure won the Wissota Midwest Modified feature at Sheyenne Speedway. Weight had an oustanding year with nine feature wins.

16-Mike Greseth of Harwood won the Wissota Modified special at Sheyenne Speedway over Dustin Strand.

20-Dustin Strand won his second NLRA Late Model feature of the season at Norman County Raceway.

21-Chris VanMil of Barnesville won a thrilling IMCA Sport Mod feature at Red River Valley Speedway.

21/22-NASCAR star Kyle Larson won World of Outlaw features at River Cities Speedway and Red River Valley Speedway.

23-Jonny Carter wrapped up the Steffes Street Stock Tour title with a feature win at Sheyenne Speedway.

27-Rob VanMil of Barnesville clinched the IMCA Stock Car track championship at Norman County Raceway with a feature win. Jesse Skalicky of Fargo won his second straight IMCA Modified point title, edging Tyler Hall for the crown.

27-Brody Carlsrud of Fargo capped off his final year in the INEX Legends Class with a win at NCR. Carlsrud, who is moving to the stock car class next year, had four wins this season, a career-best.

28-Jory Berg of Grand Forks won the Wissota Midwest Modified feature at River Cities Speedway.

29-Brady Gerdes of Villard won the Wissota Modified feature at Viking Speedway in Alexandria, and with that win, rallied for the track championship in the division.

29-Kyle Anderson of Jamestown won the Wissota Street Stock special at Devils Lake Speedway, while Nate Reynolds of Hoople captured the Midwest modified feature. Adam Sobolik of Grand Forks won his first career Western Renegade Non-Winged sprint feature. Reynolds, by the way, won the track title in convincing fashion at Devils Lake.


Zach Reinke made a late season surge to win the track title at Sheyenne Speedway

September

4-Gronwold wrapped up his third points title of 2020 in the Wissota Midwest Modified class by winning the feature at I-94. Gronwold won titles at I-94, Norman County Raceway and Viking Speedway. Dusty Bitzan, Dave Mass, Ben Wolden, Daniel Harstad, Ryan Satter and William Lund wrapped up track titles as well. Lund won his first super stock crown; Bitzan won his first modified title while Wolden won his third straight Limited Late Model crown.

4-Landon Atkinson of Little Falls won the Wissota Modified feature at I-94. Atkinson was the 2020 Ogilvie Raceway track champion.

5-Dustin Strand made a late pass of Dan Ebert to pick up the Race for the Fallen Linemen special at Viking Speedway. Strand picked up $3,000 for what was easily his biggest Viking Speedway win.

6-Zach Reinke of Lisbon won the closest point race in the RaceChaser area this season in the Wissota Midwest Modified division at Sheyenne Speedway. Reinke won the feature that night and won the tiebreaker over his brother, Nate by virtue of more feature wins at Sheyenne in 2020 (2-0). Bo Gregor won his second straight Hobby Stock title in a very close race, while Gavin Walton picked up the Mini Stock title in thrilling fashion with a feature win. Jonny Carter won his sixth straight street stock title. Tye Wilke, by the way, wrapped up his fourth track championship of 2020 as well.

10-Dustin Strand wrapped up the NLRA Late Model Championship at River Cities Speedway at the Prelude to the Johnny. Matt Schow, the 2020 River Cities Wissota Midwest Modified champion, and Jonny Carter won features.

11-Aaron Holtan of Newfolden won the Wissota Modified feature at the John Seitz Memorial during the Friday portion of the show.

12-Canadian driver Aaron Turnbull became the first driver to win back to back titles at the John Seitz Memorial Late Model Special at River Cities Speedway. Turnbull held off a furious late race challenge from A.J. Diemel of Elk Mound, Wis., to pick up the $9,200 win. Tyler Peterson (modifieds), Lance Schill (midwest modified) and Kyle Dykhoff (street stocks) won the Saturday show.

18-Jade Hastings of Grand Forks wrapped up his first NOSA Sprint Championship of his career in style by winning the feature at River Cities Speedway in dominant fashion. Hastings won six features on the summer. Travis Robertson, Dexter Dvergsten and Brandon Palm added wins.

19-Dan Ebert of Lake Shore (Wissota Late Model and Modified) and Shane Sabraski of Rice (Wissota Super Stock and Midwest Modified) won the Dick Johanneck King of the Dirt titles at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. Ryan Satter of Dent won the Wissota Street Stocks,Ryan Mikkelson of Alexandria won the Limited Late Models while Randy Thompson of Lake Park won the Short Trackers. Nearly 250 cars competed at the three-day event.

26-Cole Schill of Horace won the Wissota Late Model feature at Night 2 of the Jamestown Stampede. Ryan Mikkelson of Alexandria won the first night in the late models while Nick Thoreson of Valley City won both bomber features. Rich Pavlicek won the IMCA Sport Mod feature on Friday.


October

10-Ryan Satter of Dent won the Wissota Street Stock feature at the Fall Classic at Ogilvie Raceway.
